These are the products you need to highlight hair at home:
- mixing bowl
- hair color application brush
- hair color foils
- 2 rat tail combs (one for parting and weaving the hair, the other to secure the foils)
The first thing I do to highlight hair at home, is section my hair. I only highlight the very top layer of hair (salon’s call this a partial highlight). This is great because it damages less hair, takes less color, makes it possible for you to do it yourself, and I think it looks more natural. Just like natural highlights from the sun, only to the top is lightened. I section my hair into one middle portion that usually lies between the arches of my eyebrows and extends to the middle of my crown.
I also do a few foils on the sides right next to the middle section. Usually no more than four, but I’ll do more if it has been a while.
I start in the front and work my way back. When I section the hair to be weaved and foiled, I go the opposite way as the girl in the video. She takes sections from ear to ear; I go from front to back.

If you are doing this for the first time, you will want to do the entire strand of hair. If you are just doing root upkeep, only put color on the part of the hair you want colored.
