Ever since I discovered the difference a ball point needle can make when sewing knits, I’ve been really enthusiastic about using them. I found the red fabric used for this top in the remnant bin at JoAnn’s Fabrics. I think it cost me about $2-$3. Such a steal.
I love sewing with knits for a variety of reasons, namely how comfortable they are, and the low maintenance of not needing to be hemmed or have zippers/buttons.
This project took me just over an hour. Here’s the tutorial in pictures.
Tips for this DIY Maternity Shirt:
- use a ballpoint needle
- use iron-on hem tape for a studier hem
- use a twin needle for a more professional hem (click here for my tutorial on this)
Using iron-on hem tape around the neckline. |
Quick Summary:
I basically traced an old shirt onto a piece of folded fabric, cut both pieces at once, sewed the seams and tops of sleeves, cut the neckline, hemmed the neckline and sleeves, and was done. I didn’t even bother hemming the bottom of the shirt.
