I love wearing my husband’s shirts, unfortunately, he doesn’t love me taking them. I finally gave in and bought myself a
pack of mens’ undershirts to get me through this pregnancy, but was disappointed when I realized that the neck line was super low.
How to Make a Neckline Higher
There’s nothing comfortable about having to put your hand on your chest every time you bend over. Luckily, I came up with a quick fix–a dart.
I simply made a dart in the back of the neckline, and it created a higher neckline in front. This was the easiest fix for me since I didn’t want to deal with the shoulder seams.
Keep in mind that this shirt is HUGE, so the dart in the back didn’t affect the rest of the shirt.
Because I normally wear my hair down, the subtle dart in the back doesn’t bother me at all.
Since the shirt is a knit, I used a zig-zag stitch and a ball point needle. I went over the zig-zag with a straight stitch after so the thread wouldn’t show through.
After sewing the dart, be sure to check the fit before you cut off the extra fabric.
The view from the back.
And the front :)
Good luck if you try it!
Love this idea. I’very always done the shoulder seam route, but this is SO much easier and I bet you could cover the dart with a zipper or other trim sewn right on top of the seam.
That’s a great idea! I’ll definitely have to try that in the future!
I LOVE it!!- I will stake it a wee bit further and run that dart 5 or 6 inches in the back and Continue the seam to the bottom. It will look as if the pattern was made that way. LOL
That’s such a great suggestion!
great idea with the dart, but for someone with short hair and unable to hide that dart could continue with a seam all the way down to make it look like it’s suppose to be there :)
That’s a great idea!
You are a good writer. This is a well-done blog. Just want to mention that where you say “The dart does not effect the rest of the shirt”, the word should be “affect”. Also, the thread wouldn’t “show” through, instead of “should through”. Your auto-correct program may have messed up your great text. If you ever need an editor, I do that as a sideline. I do appreciate your writing skills!
Thanks for the feedback, Jody!
You could actually run a seam right down the back. As you stated the undershirt is huge.
This is an amazing idea. Definitely going to try it the next time.
Wow…super easy. Am so gonna try it.
Impossible to read due to advertisements over the top and bottom of the page. So I have done the UNTHINKABLE and copied it into a word.doc merely so I can read it. Sorry for the copyright violation, but you advertisers are viollating your right to be seen. Plus this grey text on grey background means I cannot see well enough to edit – sorry baout the the strage spellings. I can see the red lines but not the words above them.
I’m so sorry! I went in and tried to remove most of the ads. Hopefully that helped!
Good idea but it will shorten thee shirt
I did this and it worked for me. So simple!
Thanks Kara.
Glad I could help!
Ingenious love your idea
